FS-02 / NEW CONCEPT / FIVE REST POSITIONS

A place to pause.
Designed around the worker.

Five reclining cots, five individual fans, deep shade and an open, ventilated roof. Inspired by traditional climate-responsive architecture; adapted as a testable proposal for Vellore.

A table fan is the lower-cost baseline. This pavilion adds a place to rest and shelter from sun; it has not proved a greater cooling benefit or a lower installed cost. Start by considering an existing shaded building before constructing a new pavilion.

BORROW THE MECHANISM, NOT THE PALACE

What old architecture contributes.

Verandah + deep chajja

600 mm overhangs intercept direct sun. Adjustable side screens address lower sun angles. Actual orientation and shade coverage need a site sun-path study.

Jaali + cross ventilation

Permeable, removable screens filter sun while leaving air paths. A denser screen can reduce airflow; ornate patterns are not automatically cooling devices.

High openings + double roof

A raised ridge cap and ventilated roof cavity provide possible exhaust paths. Flow depends on wind and temperature differences; a tower alone cannot guarantee cooling.

Thermal mass: conditional

Thick stone or earth can delay heat entry when nights can remove stored heat. It adds weight and may retain heat during warm nights. Not adopted for this lightweight concept without a climate study.

Water / terracotta: optional trial

Direct evaporation adds humidity and requires clean water and maintenance. No automatic misting or wet pad is included. Consider a removable experiment only after local dry-season testing.

When passive measures are insufficient

A genuinely cooled rest room may be necessary. A separate enclosed, appropriately sized conditioned refuge is a different design and cost case; adding more fans cannot substitute for it in every condition.

REST + AIR MOVEMENT + EVIDENCE

Why five cots and five fans?

The reclining surfaces support voluntary rest, with individual airflow preference and reachable help controls. Five fans are a zoning proposal, not a cooling multiplier. Air speed must be mapped at head, torso and legs with the real guards, screens and people-sized obstructions.

Conditioned rest roomControlled air temperature and humidity when properly designedRequires an enclosed envelope, sized equipment and power; not equivalent to this open pavilion.

Cost schedule to quote: nine concept posts and engineered frame/joints, foundations, two roof skins, ridge weathering, screens, five certified cots, five selected fans, electrical protection/installation, control hardware, transport, labour, cleaning and replacement. Member sizes and installed prices are not finalized.

PHYSIOLOGY IS NOT A THERMOSTAT

Support recovery. Do not automate a BP treatment.

Blood pressure changes with posture, exertion, hydration, medicines and illness. It cannot by itself tell this controller what fan speed will help, whether someone is safe, or whether they may return to work. Reclining is a comfort option—not a treatment prescription.

Environment → comfort controls

Per-zone air temperature/RH, roof temperature, fan feedback and electrical monitoring can support a reviewed environmental control policy. Start with local manual fan adjustment and independent fault alerts. The five-zone firmware is not implemented.

Worker → human assistance

Help requests and reported symptoms should reach a trained attendant promptly. Do not wait for a BP or heart-rate threshold. A worker who is confused, collapses or is seriously unwell needs emergency assessment; do not simply leave them sleeping on a cot.

Optional health readings → clinical review

Any future BP/heart-rate measurement needs validated equipment, informed consent, a clinician-approved protocol and private data handling. No BP sensor, medical algorithm or automatic treatment loop is included in this CAD.

What AI can do

Explain completed experiments, summarize maintenance evidence and identify missing measurements for a reviewer. AI does not diagnose, prescribe cooling, suppress assistance alerts, or clear a worker to return. The public site is a static demonstration; it collects no physiological readings.

Explore the proposed operating policy

Fixed explanatory rules. Not deployed firmware, AI advice or a clinical triage tool.

What has to be demonstrated next.

  1. Compare an ordinary fan in comparable shade, an existing shaded-space retrofit and the new pavilion.
  2. Perform unoccupied paired tests first: radiation/appropriate WBGT instrumentation, air-speed maps, temperature/RH, energy, noise and fan/sensor faults. Repeat under different weather and swap positions.
  3. Review strength, drainage, guarded moving parts, electrical protection, cot capacity, clear routes and cleaning with qualified specialists.
  4. Only then consider supervised worker studies with consent, occupational-health oversight and clear stopping rules.

No physical comfort result, BP stabilization, novelty, manufacturing approval or heat-safety certification is claimed.
